Privacy & data handling
Last updated October 12, 2026 · Launch version
This notice explains the data AI Cowrite uses to provide its writing workspace. Data handling differs between the browser, account services, AI providers, and payment services.
Accounts and authentication
Clerk handles account creation and sign-in, including any social providers enabled for this application. Account information can include your email address, account identifier, and sign-in metadata. A social login may share profile information according to the provider's authorization screen.
Your drafts and browser storage
The workspace saves drafts and related writing data in this browser using IndexedDB. Signed-in document snapshots can also be stored through Cloudflare D1 for account synchronization. These snapshots may contain draft text, idea maps, writing direction, chat history, and workshop content. Some settings, folder information, and writing style preferences remain browser-local; do not assume that every preference is available on another device.
Clearing browser data can remove local writing. Export your workspace before clearing storage or moving to another device. Local storage may remain after signing out, so use care on a shared device.
AI requests
When you request AI assistance, relevant writing context is sent through our server to OpenAI. Depending on the feature, this can include selected or surrounding draft text, writing direction, a writing style, conversation context, or interview answers. Autocomplete uses a limited passage around the cursor. AI requests are not a place to submit confidential or sensitive information that you cannot share with an external processor.
OpenAI's own service terms and data controls govern its processing and retention. This notice does not promise zero retention or a particular provider training policy. We do not claim that generated output is confidential, accurate, or unique.
Subscriptions and payments
Stripe handles checkout and subscription management. We use account and subscription identifiers, plan status, and usage counters to apply your allowance. Full payment card details are handled by Stripe rather than our writing editor. Paid subscriptions are not available in the current free launch. Stripe will be used when live billing is activated.
Service and security information
Cloudflare hosts the application and account document storage. Infrastructure providers may process request metadata such as IP addresses, timestamps, and error information for delivery, security, and service operations. Authentication uses necessary session technologies. Browser storage is also used for workspace preferences and autosave.
Retention and deletion
Drafts remain in browser storage until removed or browser storage is cleared, subject to browser behavior. Account snapshots and service records are retained as needed to operate the account, apply subscriptions, diagnose problems, and meet applicable obligations. Moving a draft to Trash is recoverable and is not permanent deletion. We do not publish a fixed deletion or backup retention period in this launch version.
You can export your writing. For a request to access, correct, or delete account data, use the contact details on this site when available. Deleting a sign-in account does not necessarily clear writing stored in your browser or every service record automatically.
Processing locations and third parties
Our providers may process information in countries other than your own. Their privacy notices provide additional information: Clerk, OpenAI, Cloudflare, and Stripe.
